Google > M365 Transition FAQs

When will the transition happen?

The transition from Google Workspace to Microsoft 365 will take place between the Spring and Summer semesters. More detailed timelines will be shared as they are finalized.

Who is affected by this change?

This transition affects all Greenville Technical College students, faculty, and staff who currently use Google Workspace tools for college-related work.

What Google services are changing?

Greenville Tech will move away from Google Workspace services including Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, Sheets, Slides, and YouTube. Microsoft 365 will become the college’s primary platform for email, file storage, and collaboration.

What Microsoft 365 tools will we use instead?

  • Outlook (email)
  • OneDrive (file storage)
  • Teams (chat, meetings, and collaboration)
  • Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • YuJa

Additional guidance and training resources will be provided.

Will I lose my files or email?

Instructions for manual migration will be provided at a later date.

How should departments store shared or team files?

For files that need to be accessed by multiple people or retained by a department, we recommend using a Microsoft Team instead of an individual’s OneDrive.

Files stored in a Team are owned by the group rather than a single person. This helps ensure continued access if an employee leaves or changes roles, since Team ownership can be updated and files remain available to the department.

Departments may also continue using their departmental share on the T: drive, which has historically been used for shared storage.

Please note: the college’s data security policy and data classification standards have not yet been updated to reflect Microsoft Teams. At this time, Teams should not be used to store confidential or sensitive data (such as PII) in accordance with the current data security policy.

Do I need to do anything right now?

No immediate action is required at this time. Continue using Google Workspace as usual until further instructions are provided.

Will my email address change?

No. Your Greenville Tech email address will remain the same, but email will be accessed through Microsoft Outlook after the transition.

Will training or help be available?

Yes. Training webinars for Microsoft Teams begin Feb. 26. Sign up on PD4me.

Who can I contact if I have questions or need help?
